CJV Partners Advisory
The advisory team at CJV Partners is a Certified SAP Partner team
based in Australia. We focus on SAP procurement and warehouse
projects for mid-market and enterprise clients. Each briefing is
written by senior SAP consultants with hands-on EWM, S/4HANA and
Business Network experience.
A pivotal year for SAP-led supply chains.
The next two years will sort the leaders from the followers. Some
boards will treat SAP change as a long-term plan. Others will still
treat it as a one-off project. December 2027 is now a real date that
every CIO, CFO and COO needs to plan for.
In this edition we cover five things every leader should know.
First, the SAP dates for SCM EWM 9.5 and the rest of Business
Suite 7. Second, how to plan a warehouse upgrade and write a clear
business case for EWM. Third, where SAP Joule and the new SAP Ariba
save real money. Fourth, how to keep the supply chain steady when
things go wrong. Fifth, which Australian and global SAP events to
attend so you hear the roadmap early.
SAP WM / SCM EWM 2027:
the board-level deadline is now an execution risk.
The end-of-support date now sits inside most company plans. The
real risk is not the date itself. The real risk is whether your
team, your data and your partners can finish the work in time.

Mainstream maintenance ends for SCM EWM 9.5 and Business Suite 7 core apps
What the dates actually mean
Per the
SAP Extended Warehouse Management FAQ on end of mainstream maintenance,
mainstream maintenance for SCM EWM 9.5 alongside other
Business Suite 7 core applications runs until
31 December 2027. Compatibility pack use rights for
LE-WM terminate after 2025, removing a common
bridge that many organisations have leaned on while deferring an EWM
decision.
Stock Room Management continues to be available for
basic processes, but it receives no further investment and explicitly
excludes advanced WM functions. In SAPs own positioning,
EWM is the strategic warehouse solution –
whether deployed embedded in S/4HANA or as a decentralised
cloud-native platform.
Why this is a board issue, not just a warehouse issue
The risk is no longer just about technology. There are fewer
trained EWM consultants every year. Warehouse process redesign
takes a long time. And the work needs clean master data, which
most companies still under-fund. Boards that treat 2027 as a
finish line, instead of a planning line, will run out of time
in the last twelve months.

EWM extends its lead and absorbs more AI.
SAP EWM is the strategic warehouse product. In 2026 it was named a
Leader by Gartner for the twelfth year in a row. It supports 24
industries, runs embedded or decentralised, and now includes
AI-assisted slotting, labour planning and Joule for natural-language
warehouse questions.
consecutive year recognised as a Leader
SAP was named a Leader in the
2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Warehouse Management Systems
for the twelfth consecutive time, reinforcing EWM’s position as
the strategic platform for complex, multi-site warehouse operations.
industries supported
EWM supports SAP ERP, S/4HANA and non-SAP environments across
24 industries, with deployment options spanning
embedded, decentralised and cloud-native footprints to fit existing
operating models.
embedded across the warehouse
AI-assisted capabilities now include predictive labour demand
planning and slotting, while Joule
supports natural-language interactions for warehouse roles,
shifting EWM from execution system to decision system.
SAP Logistics Management GA
SAP Logistics Management became generally available in
February 2026 as an AI-enabled, cloud-native logistics solution that
complements EWM orchestrating transportation, yard and
warehouse touchpoints across the extended network.
Procurement collaboration becomes AI-native.
Next-gen SAP Ariba runs on SAP BTP and is AI-native from March 2026.
The
SAP Business Network
connects trading partners, supports e-invoicing in 40+ countries,
and uses business rules and AI to automate procurement end to end.
-
Trading-partner orchestration. SAP Business Network
connects trading partners to exchange transactions, share information,
improve visibility, drive compliance and lift operational efficiency
using business rules and AI to automate processes end-to-end. -
40+ countries of e-invoicing coverage. SAP states the
network supports e-invoicing mandates in
more than 40 countries, reducing the bespoke
integration burden as global compliance regimes tighten. -
Next-gen SAP Ariba is here. Per the SAP article on the
foundation for intelligent procurement, the next generation
became available in March 2026. AI-native on
SAP BTP, with incremental capabilities rolling through 2026 and 2027.

From pilots to embedded, agentic execution.
The supply chain conversation has shifted from “where do we deploy
AI?” to “where do we let AI act on our behalf”. The
answer increasingly depends on data quality, governance and the
human-intervention protocols underneath.
The autonomy curve is steepening.
Gartner research reported by ISM in a
supply chain news roundup on AI and automation
projects that 60% of supply chain disruptions may be resolved
without human involvement by 2031. The accompanying guidance
stresses controlled autonomy, data quality and governance, change
management and explicit human-intervention protocols, not
blanket automation.
Orchestration is SAP’s 2026 thesis.
In its
2026 supply chain outlook on agentic AI and orchestration,
SAP frames the year ahead as orchestration across planning, logistics,
procurement, manufacturing and extended networks, running on a
real-time data foundation. Boards should read this as a signal to
resolve data ownership and integration debt before the agentic layer is
turned on.
Six moves for the next 90 days.
Use this as a starter agenda for your next steering committee or
board sub-committee on SAP and supply chain.
-
01
Assess WM/EWM exposure.
Inventory every site running LE-WM, SCM EWM 9.5 or Stock Room Management. Quantify the operational and licensing risk against the 2025 and 2027 horizons.
-
02
Build the EWM business case.
Frame benefits in board language: service-level continuity, labour productivity, slotting and AI-assisted planning, and avoided cost on partner scarcity.
-
03
Map Business Network quick wins.
Target supplier onboarding, e-invoicing compliance and exception handling where the next-gen SAP Ariba and Business Network produce measurable ROI in under twelve months.
-
04
Prepare the data foundation for AI Joule.
Resolve master data ownership, integration debt and BTP readiness before agentic capabilities are activated, not after.
-
05
Prioritise events for roadmap intelligence.
Send the right executive to the right event – Sapphire for strategy, Mastering SAP and SAUG for operational depth and Australian peer signal.

Quick answers to this month’s briefing.
Six short questions, in the same order as the articles above, so you
can scan to the topic that matters to your board paper.
-
Why is December 2027 called out as a board-level deadline?
Mainstream maintenance for SCM EWM 9.5 and the wider SAP Business
Suite 7 core applications ends on 31 December 2027. After that date,
running on those products without a plan creates service continuity
risk and partner scarcity risk. Boards should treat 2027 as a
planning deadline, not a delivery deadline. -
What changes for EWM in 2026?
EWM has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for
Warehouse Management Systems for the twelfth year in a row. It now
supports 24 industries and adds AI-assisted features such as
predictive labour planning, slotting and Joule for natural-language
interactions on the warehouse floor. -
What is next-gen SAP Ariba and the SAP Business Network?
Next-gen SAP Ariba is the AI-native version of Ariba running on SAP
BTP, available from March 2026 with capabilities rolling out through
2026 and 2027. The SAP Business Network connects trading partners,
supports e-invoicing in more than 40 countries and uses business
rules and AI to automate procurement end-to-end. -
Which Australian SAP events should the C-suite attend in 2026?
Mastering SAP Connect on the Gold Coast on 4 to 5 June 2026 covers
EAM/SCM, master data, machine learning, AI, IoT, BTP and IBP. The
SAUG National Summit in Sydney on 23 June 2026 is the strongest
one-day local event for post-Sapphire updates and senior peer
networking. -
How autonomous will supply chains really be?
Gartner research reported by ISM projects that up to 60 per cent of
supply chain disruptions may be resolved without human involvement
by 2031. The same research warns that controlled autonomy, data
quality, governance and clear human-intervention rules must be in
place before agentic AI is switched on. -
What should the next 90 days look like for our team?
Audit every site running LE-WM, SCM EWM 9.5 or Stock Room
Management. Build the EWM business case in board language. Pick
quick wins on SAP Business Network and next-gen Ariba. Clean up
master data before turning on Joule. Send the right leader to the
right event. Subscribe to the CJV Partners briefing so the next
deadline never lands as a surprise.
Plain-English answers to the questions our clients ask most.
The questions below are paraphrased from SAP’s own EWM end of
mainstream maintenance FAQ for executives who want a quick read
before the steering committee. The original source is linked at the
bottom of this section.
-
When does mainstream maintenance end for SAP SCM EWM 9.5?
Mainstream maintenance for SAP SCM EWM 9.5, along with the rest of
the SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, ends on
31 December 2027. -
What happens to LE-WM after 2025?
The compatibility pack use rights for LE-WM in S/4HANA expire at
the end of 2025. After that, sites that still rely on LE-WM are no
longer covered by those use rights and need to plan a move to EWM
or Stock Room Management. -
Is Stock Room Management a long-term replacement for WM?
Stock Room Management can run basic warehouse processes, but SAP is
not investing in new features for it. It does not include advanced
WM functions, so it is not the strategic choice for complex sites. -
Which warehouse product does SAP recommend going forward?
SAP positions Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) as the strategic
warehouse solution. It can be deployed embedded in S/4HANA or as a
decentralised, cloud-native platform. -
Do we have to move to S/4HANA before we move to EWM?
No. Decentralised EWM can run alongside an existing ECC or
S/4HANA system, which lets organisations modernise the warehouse
first and sequence the wider S/4HANA programme separately. -
What about extended maintenance after 2027?
SAP has indicated that extended maintenance options may be
available for some Business Suite 7 components after 2027 at an
additional fee. Boards should treat that as a safety net, not a
strategy. -
How long does an EWM migration usually take?
Most mid-sized to large warehouse networks need 12 to 24 months to
design, build, test, train and stabilise EWM. Starting in 2026
gives organisations a realistic buffer ahead of the 2027 deadline. -
What should we do first?
Inventory every distribution centre and warehouse site, list which
product each one runs, and quantify the risk against the 2025 and
2027 dates. Use that picture to build the EWM business case for
your board.
